Stacey Mayo is a professional artist who always considered art her side gig. She retired from her full-time business in the beginning of this year to pursue art full-time and explore her creative abilities. Two weeks before her retirement date, Stacey fell flat on a parking bump in the parking lot of a Michael's Craft Store and shattered her wrist on her dominant hand. Immediate surgery was required and a plate and six pins were inserted. Her orthopedic surgeon told her it would take 6 to 12 months to heal completely. According to the Worldwide Health Organization, "The number of serious falls reported worldwide is surging and already accounts for an estimated 684,000 deaths annually." Mayo said, "Even though it's really painful, I feel fortunate that my fall wasn't any more serious than it was."
After a couple weeks, Stacey was frustrated in many ways, including creatively and took out her iPad to try to paint some space art with her non-dominant hand. She found she was able to use the stylus to some degree and started painting. She collaborated with her husband, Mike who has Essential Tremors (ET). This condition is inherited and causes his hands to shake a lot, limiting his ability to do many things, including use a paintbrush to do details or even loose work. According to the International Essential Tremor Foundation, an estimated 7 - 10 million Americans have Essential Tremors (ET).
Despite their handicaps, the couple combined her knowledge of using Procreate software on the iPad to do art and his knowledge of astronomy to create a beautiful painting, unlike any they had done before. Procreate is a popular digital art and illustration app developed specifically for iPad and iPhone devices. According to Wikipedia, professional artists have used Procreate to create the posters for Stranger Things, Logan, and Blade Runner as well as several covers for The New Yorker. It has also been professionally adopted at Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Disney Animation, and Pixar." Stacey created a portrait painting of Einstein on it.
Mayo said, "This was the first time Mike and I ever collaborated on a piece of art. It was also the first painting Mike had ever done. We are excited about how it turned out and have received great feedback."
