At a time when Apple is being accused of not being creative enough, it seems the iPhone creator is busy working on a smartwatch that will be powered by a new kind of high-tech battery.
According to the New York Times, Apple has been quietly recruiting engineers from Tesla and Toyota who specialize in designing new batteries that utilize various innovative technologies. That’s because the winner of the upcoming smartwatch war will be the company’s with the lightest, longest lasting battery pack.
By building its smartwatch, which is supposed to be rolled out later this year, on a strong battery foundation, Apple hopes to avoid the setbacks Samsung experienced when it introduced its smartwatch with a short battery life.
New Battery Technologies
According to published reports, Apple is experimenting with such exotic technologies as wireless charging technologies and even solar cells embedded on its smartwatch’s face used to generate electricity.
On Feb 3, Apple Inc. (NASDAQDS: AAPL) share price closed at $ 501.53, up 93 cents from the previous day’s share price of $ 500.60. It did so with 14,374,396 shares changing hands, slightly higher than its three-month volume of 12,227,292.

Apple’s stock is coming off a rocky week sparked in part by negative comments from billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who piled on with others criticizing disappointing iPhone sales and Apple’s propensity to hold on to what Icahn believes is too much cash that should instead be lining the pockets of investors like him. Although Icahn’s plan for Apple to deplete its surplus has great short-term appeal for investors, it could weaken one of the most successful companies in history’s long-term plans.
At the same time Icahn wailed about Apple’s perceived problems, he bought another $550-million shares. Note: Actions speak louder than words. Meanwhile, a background mantra has been growing louder which says Apple is no longer as creative as it once was because current CEO Tim Cook is no Steve Jobs, the late founder of the tech giant. Yet, Apple is creative enough to try and design a hitherto unknown battery technology to power its soon-to-be-released smartwatch.
New Products Growing
It’s only been a few months ago since Apple unveiled its one-pound iPad air and well-received Macbook Pro. As we have reported the company is also talking about releasing a smartwatch and a new iPhone with a larger screen that when released will probably spark winding lines around every Apple store on this planet.
Meanwhile, Apple’s massive selling infrastructure, capable of selling apps, eBooks and iTunes has massive room for expansion while others try to reinvent Apple. And don’t forget, its chief rival Samsung is still reeling from recent patent infringement court cases it lost against Apple.
Of the 35 analysts that cover Apple, 24 recommend a “strong buy,” 4 recommend a “buy” and 7 recommend a “hold.”
TriQuint to Release Fourth-Quarter Results
Semiconductor companies that make chips for smartphones also stand to benefit from Apple’s and Samsung’s foray into the smartwatch market.
One such company is TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. (NASDAQ:TQNT)
On Feb. 3, the Hillsboro, Ore.-based company’s stock volume soared, with 2,387,734 shares changing hands, higher than its three-month average of 1,956,311shares.
The uptick in volume could have been triggered in part by the fact the Hillsboro, Ore-based chip maker is set to announce its fourth-quarter, 2013 earnings Wed., Feb. 4. The volume could also being generated by a report released Jan. 24 by Global Industry Analysts Inc. that predicts a strong demand for semiconductors in 2014 as a result of growing smartphone sales.
“Market for handset semiconductors is expected to witness strong growth driven by rising penetration of mobile phones and smartphones in developing countries,” the report said. “Taiwan and China represent major supplier of hand set semiconductors, worldwide,” it added.
