NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / June 15, 2023 / World Science Scholars (WSS) hosted a group of 36 scholars hailing from 11 countries for a STEM festival in New York City from May 31 through June 4, 2023. Each year, WSS selects a small number of high school students from around the world who are exceptionally gifted in mathematics and who have a passion for science and provides them the opportunity to explore disciplines at the forefront of science through online courses taught by leading researchers in those fields. This WSS Festival served as a culmination of the academic year for the 2022 cohort of World Science Scholars.

These scholars, most accompanied by a family member, attended the all-inclusive trip to participate in the festival. The scholars participated in a variety of activities, exploring both academic and cultural aspects of the city. During the five days, they heard a series of talks from eminent scientists, including Nobel Laureate James Peebles, Brian Greene, Erich Jarvis, Constantina Theofanopoulou, Cristina Alberini, and Stefanie Milam. They also heard from and toured the labs of leading researchers at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, including Rein Ulijn, Andrea Alù, and Shana Elbaum-Garfinkle. Scholars also learned about quantum computing at the Shabani Lab at New York University and heard from a graduate student panel at Columbia University. Cultural activities included visits to the Hall de Lumières, the American Museum of Natural History, and the 9/11 Memorial. During these activities, scholars engaged in discussions around new and exciting scientific fields. The 2023 festival facilitated scholars bonding with their peers over their shared love of math and science and forming what promise to be lasting friendships.

The festival helped realize a major goal of the WSS program: to bring together some of the brightest and most ambitious young minds from across the world and expose them to scientific fields, opportunities, and renowned scientists who can help broaden their outlook on how they can engage in science to change the world.

WSS Program Description

WSS is an initiative of World Science U, the education arm of the World Science Festival. WSS selects a small group of high school students from around the world with extraordinary mathematical talent and provides them with an unparalleled opportunity to apply their abilities to unexplored disciplines. Guided by world-renowned experts, scholars examine ways that advanced mathematics skills can be applied to solve complex challenges in a wide range of scientific fields.

Participants in the WSS program currently hail from across the United States and 32 additional countries across six continents. Thanks to the close interaction between scholars and professors, the WSS program has served as a stepping stone for scholars to obtain opportunities that often are only available to college students.
