DJ Bettencourt Scholarship to Empower Insurance Professionals Available Now

SALEM, NH / ACCESSWIRE / April 18, 2023 / The DJ Bettencourt Scholarship for Insurance Professionals is pleased to announce the launch of its annual scholarship program, which will provide a one-time award of $1,000 to a deserving student pursuing a degree in insurance. The scholarship is open to current business undergraduates enrolled in a university located within the United States or high school students who are soon to enroll in a university and pursue a degree in an insurance related field.

The selection process consists of an essay submission, with one recipient being chosen based on the quality of their work. To be eligible for the scholarship, prospective applicants must submit an essay of under 1,000 words answering the following prompt: "The insurance industry in the United States has room for improvement. Describe an issue concerning insurance and how you think it could be reformed."

In addition to Bettencourt, the selection committee includes a distinguished panel of insurance regulators from across the country:

  • Roger Sevigny: Former Commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department & past President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
  • Jackie Obusek: Chief Deputy Commissioner, North Carolina Insurance Department
  • Brian Downs: First Deputy Commissioner, Chief of Staff for the Oklahoma Insurance Department
  • Martin Sullivan: Chief Deputy Commissioner, Georgia Department of Insurance and Fire Safety

The DJ Bettencourt Scholarship for Insurance Professionals is named after its founder, D.J. Bettencourt, who is currently the Deputy Commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department. Born and raised in Salem, New Hampshire, D.J. has had an accomplished career in both public and community service. He attended the University of New Hampshire, where he earned two bachelor's degrees in political science and communication. In 2015, he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

D.J. Bettencourt has been active in politics since he was a campaign volunteer for George W. Bush in 2000. He worked as an intern on Gordon J. Humphrey's 2002 gubernatorial campaign and on Mitt Romney's 2002 gubernatorial campaign. From 2004 to 2012, D.J. served as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, serving as the majority leader for his last two years.

As Deputy Commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department, D.J. works towards the development and enforcement of the State of New Hampshire's insurance laws. The D.J. Bettencourt Scholarship for Insurance Professionals reflects his commitment to supporting the next generation of professionals in this field.
