Associate Professor BJ Rye Provides Advice For Those Looking to Pursue a Career In Psychology

Tuesday, 28 March 2023 08:00 AM

WATERLOO, ON / ACCESSWIRE / March 28, 2023 / BJ Rye is a well-respected scholar and associate professor in the Psychology Department at St. Jerome's University. BJ has been published in multiple academic journals and has been involved in several advanced research projects. Her most current research focuses on attitudes toward sexual minorities, including attitudes towards transgender individuals and controversial sexual topics such as abortion. In a new online interview, BJ takes the time to discuss her role as a university professor and her future in the academic space.

BJ took inspiration from her previous professors to pursue an academic career in psychology. Since then, she has done her best to inspire her own students to question traditional modes of thinking. When it comes to productivity, she says that success comes down to time management and organization.

"Many people have the ability and skills to be productive, but they do not have persistence. My advice for those who want to succeed in academia: be persistent and learn to manage your time well. Then, learn to say ‘no'. In other words, learn how to set boundaries. I've seen many colleagues say yes to too many requests and then they end up spreading themselves too thinly."

Having to balance teaching and research, BJ understands the importance of creating and maintaining professional boundaries. While she finds advanced research projects highly rewarding, she also states that as a labour of love and requires time and patience.

"One lesson I have learned is to always ask questions, listen to others, and keep an open mind. In academia, as well as in life, it is a good idea to maintain your curiosity. While not necessarily a lesson I've learned, I will add another guiding principle: the Golden Rule. Treat people the way you want to be treated. You'd be surprised that people don't seem to understand how you treat others can have an effect on the rest of your life, including your career."

According to BJ, finding the ideal academic position is more than simply finding a job teaching. She claims she is fortunate that her interests and skill set lined up with her current academic position and looks forward to continuing her academic career.
