A Therapeutic Overview of Uinta Academy

Thursday, 09 March 2023 02:25 PM

CACHE COUNTY, UT / ACCESSWIRE / March 9, 2023 / The Uinta Academy is a relationship-centered residential treatment center for teens and young adults. The therapists, educators, and milieu staff at Uinta integrate numerous research-based therapy modalities to help heal the mind, body, and soul. The goal is to help at-risk young people with mental health disorders and trauma finds relief in a nurturing, inspiring, and family-style atmosphere.

Staff at Uinta recently offered a therapeutic overview of their program for existing and future residents.

Equine-assisted Psychotherapy

Equine-assisted therapy is a huge draw for students and families when considering Uinta. Upon arrival, each student is entrusted with their own horse to care for throughout their stay. This is an aspect that is unique to Uinta Academy and one that stands out among residential treatment centers. The horses that live on-site serve several purposes in helping young people heal.

By being entrusted with a horse throughout their stay, youth learn responsibility, caretaking, reciprocity, and clear communication. The relationships they develop with the horses mirror the relationships they create with peers, family, and themselves.

Horses are intuitive herd animals that make excellent partners for people with mental health struggles and those who have experienced trauma. Through grooming, feeding, and socializing with their horse, the student and horse create a trusting, non-judgemental space of mutual carte.

While students at Uinta partake in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and horseback riding, these activities are done at a local ranch off-campus-not with the horses they are entrusted with at Uinta. This is done intentionally to ensure that the bonds they build with their horse are based on reciprocity. Riding horses requires the rider to take the place of power over the horse, to respectfully command the horse.

Relational Therapy

Relational therapy is central to therapeutic programming at Uinta. This is a form of talk therapy centered on fostering positive relationships. The foundation of this modality demonstrates that healthy relationships are essential to self-esteem and overall well-being.

Relational therapy can aid young people dealing with a variety of anxieties and relationship issues. The following are a few of the relationship difficulties this type of therapy can help with:

  • relationship issues within the family
  • interactions with peers
  • pushing away others, even when you want them in your life
  • relationship conflicts regarding trust and communication

Outdoor Recreational Therapy

In addition to equine-assisted therapy, some outdoor recreation is included in programming to help treat anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health disorders. Some examples of outdoor recreational therapy offered at the program may include hiking, mountain biking, white-water rafting, skiing, snowboarding, and more.

Creative Arts

Some individuals express themselves best through the arts. Uinta offers a long list of creative arts activities and classes to help teens and young adults reach their full potential. Throughout their treatment, students partake in weekly creative art lessons such as drawing, painting, photography, interior design, creative writing, and singing. Monthly cultural arts outings allow students to attend the opera, ballet, theater, museum, art walks, and local musical events.

Life at Uinta Academy

While Uinta Academy is a treatment center, the professional staff strives to let the young people undergoing treatment experience the activities other teenagers enjoy as well. Many visitors are delighted to see that Uinta is a family-style home in a mountain neighborhood surrounded by opportunities for adventure.

The diverse, relationship-driven modalities of therapy at Uinta aim to help youth and their families heal, so they can lead healthy, happy, and productive lives.
