Friday, 18 November 2022 09:00 AM

The Jackson, Tennessee-based care community wishes to celebrate the annual occasion by calling attention to and spreading awareness about Down Syndrome.

JACKSON, TN / ACCESSWIRE / November 18, 2022 / Each year, the month of October serves as Down Syndrome Awareness Month across the United States. As a renowned residential care community for people with special needs, including intellectual and developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, Capitol City Residential Health Care wishes to call attention to and celebrate the many inspirational individuals across the country who live their lives with this condition.

Facts About Down Syndrome

Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21 which is believed to appear by chance. It occurs at an approximate rate of 1 in 700, and is one of the most common chromosomal conditions in human beings. About six thousand babies are born with Down syndrome in the United States every year.

The condition is associated with delays in physical growth, characteristic facial features, and a degree of intellectual disability. The parents of those born with Down syndrome usually do not have Down syndrome themselves, but the likelihood of any child being born with the condition rises as the age of the mother increases. There is no cure for Down syndrome.

Ways to Observe Down Syndrome Awareness Month

There are many ways that people can observe and participate in Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Among them are carrying out 31 random acts of kindness (one for each day of the month), volunteering with a Down syndrome advocacy organization, or joining one of the 250 Buddy Walks that take place nationwide during the month of October. Additionally, the National Down Syndrome Society recommends creating a Facebook fundraiser, sending out Down Syndrome Awareness Month e-cards to friends and family, and sharing facts about Down syndrome over social media as some other excellent ways to get involved.

Capitol City Residential Health Care believes that Down Syndrome Awareness Month is important for teaching people about the often-misunderstood condition and that it serves to foster more inclusion, understanding, and opportunities for the people it affects. The Jackson, Tennessee-based care community salutes all those living with Down syndrome and is firm in its belief that aided by a loving and stimulating home environment and plenty of community support, these individuals can lead productive, fulfilling, and independent lives.
