Taylor Clark, Director of Responsibility

"Responsibility is one of Milo's core values. As a leader in sustainability, we hope to inspire other family-owned companies across the nation to follow our lead," says Tricia Wallwork, CEO of Milo's Tea Company. "We consistently challenge our team to find opportunities to reduce our impact on the environment. Our sustainability team has made transformative investments and improvements to our operations that will make a difference for generations to come."

The beverage manufacturer reflects their commitment to the environment with the creation of three new positions to ensure the company's longstanding efforts to invest in conservation and responsibility.

Taylor Clark, newly appointed Director of Corporate Responsibility, brings twenty years of purpose-driven and growth-focused leadership with a passion for sustainability and strategic corporate responsibility.

"This is the evolution of Milo's responsibility journey, and I am thrilled to embark on this chapter of purposeful growth with the company," says Clark.

Clark is the most recent of three Responsibility new hires; Director of Sustainability, Logan Rich, comes to Milo's with ten years of manufacturing experience with a focus on operations management and continuous improvement. Jay Wos, Sr. Packaging/Sustainability Engineer, has spent his career working in all facets of sustainability from supply chain to solar power. The new hires effectively double the team size to achieve Milo's conservation, zero waste, and renewable energy goals.

Water Conservation Initiatives

Milo's Tea Company has invested $5.2 million in water conservation infrastructure at its Bessemer facility with plans to implement similar systems at all its facilities. The new system recycles 70% of water used in the production process, conserving and reusing 60,000 gallons of water per day. The water saved in one year can fill more than 33 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Zero Waste Commitment and Certification

The company has achieved T.R.U.E. GBCI Zero Waste Platinum Certification at two of its manufacturing facilities, making Milo's Tea Company the only beverage manufacturer in Alabama and Oklahoma to attain this certification. Going forward, the company plans to Platinum-certify all new facilities within three years of opening.

In 2021, Milo's Tea diverted more than 63 million pounds of waste from landfills by:

  • Donating and composting 720 tons of tea leaf waste weekly, in partnership with local composting facilities.
  • Recycling 95% of waste produced during manufacturing.
  • Producing and packing our product with 69% post-consumer recycled materials and 99% recyclable materials.

Conserving Resources and Investing in Renewable Energy

Milo's Tea recognizes the global pollution crisis and has significantly changed its approach to packaging. By 2025, the company aims to eliminate scope one and two emissions, reduce its use of virgin plastic, and design 100% of its packaging to be fully recyclable.

Other environmental improvements include:

  • Overall plastic packaging reduction goal of 10% by 2025.
  • Reduce packaging, resulting in using 292,000 pounds less cardboard in 2021.
  • Plans to transition company-owned diesel vehicles to electric vehicles.

"Responsibility was a core value embodied by my grandparents, Milo and Bea Carlton," says Wallwork. "Today, and as we look ahead, Milo's is committed to improving ourselves and our operations to make a difference for all people and the planet."
