Dr. Jay Johannigman serves as the Chief Medical Officer of Knight Aerospace, a global leader for custom quick-change medical modules for air transport. He also remains active in the medical field, serving as a trauma surgeon at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, and specializing in trauma, emergency general surgery, critical care, and elective surgery.

Our Featured selected Dr. Johannigman in recognition of his lifetime of contributions to emergency medical care.

"Dr. Johannigman is a highly talented and devoted leader in healthcare," says Natalie Nguyen, a researcher for Our Featured. "Not only is he an active surgeon, but he was a resident surgeon for 25 years and served in the United States Air Force for almost forty years. He's a researcher who oversees lifesaving advancements, and we're honored to present this recognition to him."

Dr. Johanningman's work in Cincinnati spans several decades, including 25 years in the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He then served in the University Hospital in Cincinnati as the Director of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery. He would later develop the West Chester Hospital into a Level III Trauma Center. He was also the founding leader in establishing the Cincinnati Center for the Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (Cincinnati CSTARS) in 2001, one of the first military-civilian strategic partnerships in the country.

His achievements as a civilian developed at the same time as his achievements in the military as a military trauma surgeon. He's received numerous accolades in the USAF and achieved the rank of colonel. He has served in seven deployments, and currently still holds his ranking as a flight surgeon.

In his current role in Knight Aerospace in San Antonio, TX, Dr. Johanningman's responsibilities include overseeing the development of "flying emergency rooms." Since 2020, he's been responsible for delivering on the company's technology that would allow cargo aircraft to quickly convert into life-saving air vehicles, as well as self-contained units to transport highly contagious patients.

Other awards he's earned in his decorated career include the Barry Goldwater Service Award from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USU) and the Distinguished Service Award from the Military Health System Research Symposium.

"It's truly an honor," says Jay Johannigman, "I'm grateful for the recognition of the work I've accomplished in medical evaluation and trauma surgery, and I look forward to continuing this legacy of leadership and innovation in the field to continue to save more lives."

He also has nearly 100 peer-reviewed research publications in his name, including work in the fields of mechanical ventilation, resuscitation, and trauma care. In his spare time, Dr. Johanningman nurtures his passion for cycling.
