NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / October 25, 2021 / Dr. Gautam Arora, neurologist and pain intervention physician of GNG Medical Supplies and Neurology and Pain Management Clinic (NPMC) talks about the best ways to manage Alzheimer's Disease.
- GNG Medical Supplies is a New York-based doctor practice that offers diagnoses of pain and related disorders and treatment of such through the application of interventional techniques.
- The Neurology and Pain Management Clinic, also founded by Dr. Gautam Arora, provides neurology services and pain intervention including electroencephalogramography (EEGs), electromy (EMG) tests, lumbar puncture test, spinal cord stimulation, cancer pain management, and many others.
Alzheimer's Disease is the most common cause and type of Dementia, which is a general term for a decline in reasoning, memory, and other mental abilities. The former is a specific disease that is characterized by complex brain changes that lead to problems in behavior, disorientation, and confusion as it advances.
Dr. Gautam talks about various ways to manage the disease effectively without over-medicating patients who have this type of dementia. He says that trying the least invasive routes first is always recommended for Alzheimer's Disease patients for the treatment to be painless. He adds that medications are also an option but are always dependent on patient response.
"There are many different treatments available for people with dementia," says Dr. Arora, "and there is still much research being done."
Furthermore, the neurologist explained that aside from medications that can help with memory loss or depression related to the disease, there are several techniques that you can adopt to help your loved ones who are dealing with its symptoms.
According to Dr. Gautam, music therapy may improve mood or reduce anxiety. Playing relaxing music can soothe and encourage a feeling of comfort. Aside from that, there have also been studies that prove music's power as it helps patients improve their ability to focus and communicate.
In addition, music can also bring patients to discuss past events, especially when they hear their favorite songs.
Apart from music therapy, patients should also be encouraged to engage in activities they find enjoyable such as reading a book or watching television shows they enjoy so they feel less isolated from their surroundings.
Dr. Gautam Arora said that joining them to watch their favorite tv shows can reduce feelings of anxiety by promoting interaction and reliving fun memories about their most-watched series or movies. Moreover, research suggests that consistently doing mental activities such as reading can help keep our memory and mental abilities intact.
Exercise such as walking is also another way to effectively reduce stress for an Alzheimer's patient. "Aside from stimulating the brain, physical activities help in keeping our body's blood flow normal and increase positive brain chemicals," said Dr. Gautam.
Lastly, he also recommends that we help patients to exercise their brains through puzzles or card games because these can help improve thought processes and encourage alertness.
"It's important to try and think of Alzheimer's Disease as a condition, not a person," Gautam adds. "The patient is still there, they're still who they are." Dr. Gautam urges families to make time for their loved ones after finding the right kind of activities for them to enjoy with less resistance from the patient.
