Early on in the interview, upon being asked why he chose to become a professional educator, Jonathan responds without hesitation. "I wanted to make a difference in other peoples' lives," he says, before conjuring up a memory to illustrate his thinking at the time. "I remember clearly, the first time I was offered a job in schooling, it was a very nice independent school near Bristol. It had everything you could ever want in a school-wonderful people, wonderful staff, a pleasant learning environment. But then I went for another interview at a different school, and it was a school in a resettlement area. This school was having serious issues with behaviour and with academic achievement. The school was struggling, and seeing that, it struck me: I want to be in a place where I can really make a difference, where I could help people achieve their best, and to do better than they ever thought they could do." He concludes this section of the interview by explicitly stating an epiphany that struck him, then and there, regarding his career path. "At that moment, I knew that resettlement school was where I could do the most good. And that mindset stayed with me throughout my entire career in education; I wanted people to achieve their potential and achieve amazing things. That's what I feel passionately about."
