"If you're starting a business, it's smart to first look for an industry or project that you find very interesting," Dr. Gregory Finkelson says. Starting a business takes a lot of work. You likely won't be working "just" 9 to 5. You may end up working 16 hours or more in a single day. In a single week, working 80 hours or more is common.

"When I first started my business, working overtime was normal for me. Some weeks, I'd work 80 or 90 hours a week, and I wasn't getting paid hourly for that," Gregory Finkelson notes. "Still, you need to make sure you rest when you can. When it comes to work, quality is more important than quantity."

Working long hours may be tempting for many early-stage entrepreneurs. And sometimes, it's unavoidable. That said, however, you need to make sure that you're rested enough to put in good work day in and day out.

"One of the most important tips I could give any entrepreneur is to make sure that you get enough sleep," Gregory Finkelson argues. "Being rested keeps the mind clear and helps you make better decisions. After that, make sure you surround yourself with the best staff possible."

Arguably, a company is only as good as its "weakest" employee. You'll want to make sure that you surround yourself with talented, driven people. The right employees could make or break a company. Setting up a pay structure that rewards success is also wise.

Listening is an important tool for a business leader. You won't have all of the answers. By listening to your employees, you may open yourself to great ideas. You'll also motivate your employees and encourage them to share their insights.

"Most businesses are about teamwork," Gregory Finkelson points out. "By creating a strong team environment, you can increase innovation and productivity. In the long run, this may lead to more success for your company."

Sometimes, it's tempting to micromanage employees. With new hires, a lot of oversight might be needed. However, over time, you'll want to bring on team members who can act on their own. As an owner and manager, you need to find employees you can trust and rely on.

"Finding employees you can rely on is vital," Dr. Gregory Finkelson points out. "You can't be a one-man army. With the right support and employees, however, the sky is the limit."
