That is the thing with the majority of job boards these days. Although recruiters love them because they make it easier to publish open positions and reach a large audience effortlessly, they no longer work for candidates. About 70 to 80 per cent of jobs are not published through job boards, and less than two per cent of candidates who apply online get invited for interviews.

As recruiters tasked to fulfil companies' workforce needs, recruiters need to source hundreds of candidates to find those who fit the given requirements. However, discovering those skilled candidates one by one is often time-consuming, with a recruiter spending an average of two hours to source and interview one prospective entry-level candidate. That means if there are multiple positions to fill, the hours will add up, making the process even longer. For most recruiters who work on a commission basis, a longer recruitment time means the possibility for missed targets, fewer placements, and lower income.
Job boards are great for recruiters, helping cut down the recruitment time in half. In most cases, they use those job boards in conjunction with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to collect candidates' CVs, rank them according to qualifications and keywords, and weed out candidates who don't fit the requirements. This software allows recruiters to build a pipeline of candidates for open roles long before those jobs make it onto the job boards.
Once jobs are published, they often receive hundreds of applications. On average, recruiters will review about 10-20 applications, which means the remaining applications will not be considered. While some candidates will be informed if they weren't selected, the majority will not get any response simply because the ATS didn't pick up their CVs.
Now that you know how job boards work, you're probably wondering what step you need to take to move your job search forward. While using job boards isn't necessarily a bad thing, you shouldn't rely on them solely to power your job search and blindly hope that a recruiter will contact you to set up an interview.
You'll have better chances of getting noticed by employers by establishing a solid social media presence. In the past decade, a growing number of companies have gotten more creative in recruiting talents, aside from using job boards.
