Life is Different Down South, Says, Annette H Bratcher

MURFREESBORO, TN / ACCESSWIRE / September 20, 2021 / Middle Tennessee is one of the fastest-growing areas in the country, fueled largely by businesses and individuals moving into it from other regions. Many of those moving are from the North, where customs, speech and lifestyles differ from Middle Tennessee. According to Annette H Bratcher, Middle Tennessee provides a high quality of life that is true to its Southern roots. Here are a few things Northerners can expect when they move to Middle Tennessee.

Pace of Life
The pace of life is slower in Middle Tennessee than in many Northern cities. People move and talk more slowly. They may even stop and engage in conversations with strangers in stores or other public spaces.

Dialects
Tennesseans use phrases that may be foreign to some Northerners. For example, they'll tend to ask for a "Coke" rather than pop or tonic, which Northerners frequently use. Many take their buggies into the grocery store rather than shopping carts. Some Tennesseans refer to the toilet as a commode and the bathroom as the powder room, as well, says Annette H Bratcher.

Cost of Living
The cost of living also is lower in Middle Tennessee than in many Northern cities. For example, the Boston metropolitan area is about 49 percent more expensive to live in than the Nashville- Davidson metropolitan area, says Annette H Bratcher.

Vibrant Music Scene
Nashville is Music City. Live music is available almost every day in Middle Tennessee. Middle Tennessee is known as the home of country music; however, a diversity of music, including blues, rock, and Cajun, are found here.

SEC Football
College football is prevalent in the South, especially the Southeastern Conference and the Vanderbilt Commodores. When scheduling major events, Middle Tennesseans avoid SEC game days so that people will attend the events rather than watching the game. On the other hand, football days provide opportunities for non-fans to go shopping to avoid the crowds, says Annette H Bratcher.

Different Foods
Tennessee is famous for its barbecue, and Northern barbecue doesn't compare, she says. Iced tea is often served very sweet in Middle Tennessee; Northerners who prefer less sugar will need to remember to ask for unsweetened tea. Greens also taste differently in the South.

The Great Outdoors
Because the weather is often pleasant, Middle Tennesseans spend a lot of time outdoors. They golf and walk along lakes, parks, or greenways. They visit swimming holes such as the one at Cummins Falls or go canoeing and rafting.
