The state prosecutor and a supervisor in the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit for the Broward State Attorney's Office spoke on camera about ways to educate children about some delicate topics.
MIAMI, FL / ACCESSWIRE / July 14, 2021 / Stacey Honowitz shared an important message for all parents during her interview on the morning show, Inside South Florida, which focuses on how parents should educate their kids about sexual abuse and the importance of reporting and not keeping these abuses a secret. The interview segment, which appeared on Inside South Florida as broadcast on WSFL-TV/Channel 39, largely centers on Stacey's expertise of how best to educate kids about criminal acts involving children. At the interview's outset, upon being asked about her role in the Broward State Attorney's Office, Stacey Honowitz goes into detail, explaining, 'I prosecute child abuse and sex crimes cases in the county,' adding, 'what we do is we see victims of horrific abuses, and I've been there for a long time to try to educate, to try to help, and to prosecute those who have violated a child.'
After establishing Stacey as an authority, program host Jason Carter introduces the fact that she has written a few children's books on the topics of child sexual abuse and bullying, proceeding to inquire what inspired her to put pen to paper. 'I noticed in my time in the State Attorney's Office that a lot of parents would come to me and say ‘I don't know how to begin a conversation like this. It's delicate, it's difficult, but it's necessary.' So, I thought the easiest way to do it would be to provide them with some tools, and the tools that I gave them were books,' says Stacey, adding, 'It's very easy for the parents because there's a book involved, it's in limerick form-kids, I think, tend to remember things that rhyme. Remember our nursery rhymes when we were little? And so, because this subject is kind of difficult and taboo, I thought the books would be a way to introduce kids, to gain this knowledge.'
At the interview's conclusion, Stacey Honowitz is asked what message she most wishes to convey to parents while she has the attention of such a large audience. 'I think what I would tell parents is don't be nervous. That's the biggest problem. Parents are kind of nervous about how to begin this discussion, but it's everyday life that you're dealing with. If you pick up the newspaper, if you turn on the TV, you always hear about bullying going on in schools, or sexual abuse, or physical abuse,' she replies. 'If you sit down and have a conversation-and not just one, it's kind of an ongoing situation-you know, that ten minutes of feeling uncomfortable is going to be a lot better than maybe ending up in the State Attorney's Office if your child is either a defendant, a perpetrator, or a victim.'
