Can you explain what you do at Select Wealth Advisers?

Mark Bailey: Select Wealth Advisers is a boutique full-service financial advisory firm. Basically, we help our clients create a plan to protect and grow their wealth. Each client's plan is customized and based on their financial goals, lifestyle, and personal risk tolerance.

My main focus areas are retirement and investment planning, with an emphasis on helping clients create tax-free income in retirement. Currently, if your household is making over $83,682, you are in the top 25% of wage earners. Consequently, this also puts you in the bucket of people paying 86% of all tax revenue collected for the government! Financial advice you hear on the TV or Radio or any other medium is actually talking to the Other 75%. Just think about it…if you were a host of a TV or radio show, wouldn't you be interested in gaining the most amount of people for your audience? If you were selling a book, Wouldn't you want the most amount of books purchased? The advice you hear through these mediums is very sound advice, but they're not talking to you, they're talking to the majority of Americans, the Other 75%. They're telling them how to handle their cash-flow problems. The biggest problem I see is people in the top 25% category listening to advice meant for the 75% category.

The financial advice given to the Top 25% is very different. We focus on how to minimize or completely eliminate the huge problem we all share: taxes! The Other 75% have a cash-flow problem while the Top 25% have a tax-flow problem.

Any advice for people looking to secure their financial futures?

Mark Bailey: My business this last year was all about implementing strategies based on the assumption that taxes will be going up. Being in the historically low tax environment that we are, wouldn't it make sense to pay taxes now versus waiting for what will most likely be higher tax rates in the near future? Tax-deferred doesn't mean ‘tax never', you eventually will pay taxes on these accounts. So if you want to learn more about this and the strategies we use, we should have a conversation soon.

Why did you get involved in the Financial Services industry?

Mark Bailey: Long story short, my parents got a letter from their life insurance company that said if they wanted to keep my dad's policy alive that they had been paying on for over 10 years, they'd have to start paying $6-7K every quarter. They couldn't afford to do that, so it lapsed. My dad was then in his early 70's and developed Prostate cancer and Alzheimer's, so he was uninsurable. It really bothered me that they had been misinformed on their life insurance, and I wanted to learn as much as I could about personal finances and life insurance, so this same thing wouldn't happen to me or anybody else I cared about ever again.

So that's how I got involved. I started with a large mutual insurance company and then went to a small, independent Registered Investment Advisor until I ended up where I am now with Select Wealth Advisers. Working in my previous roles gave me a chance to get a financial education. I originally got licensed in 1993, but I've been working in this part of the industry since 2012.
