ATLANTA, GA / ACCESSWIRE / March 30, 2021 / Leadership is a quality that can help shape companies, communities, families, and entire nations. Many Americans know that employers view leadership as a strong quality when hiring individuals, but they don't know exactly what it takes to be viewed as a good leader by others.Alton P. Hobbs Jr. is a senior environmental consultant and philanthropist who views leadership as one of the most important qualities a person can have, at home and at the workplace. He recently discussed key characteristics of a great leader.

"Being a great leader doesn't mean you possess just one positive quality," Alton P. Hobbs Jr. said. "You must have a variety of skills that, when combined, result in excellent leadership."

Hobbs explained that a great leader must have integrity. Leaders need to make important decisions and those decisions need to be made with the greater good in mind. A quality leader, no matter where he or she stands in the hierarchy of the workplace, must have integrity. Hobbs added that a similar characteristic of leadership is self-awareness. It's important for a leader to understand his or her strong points as well as their faults. This allows them to take charge in areas of expertise and delegate tasks to others when needed.

"A great leader has courage," Alton P. Hobbs Jr. said. "Problems need to be confronted head-on and never avoided. Courage allows a great leader to deal with issues as they arise and tackle them to move onto other tasks."

Hobbs added that in addition to courage, a great leader must have excellent communication skills. Leadership and communication are always intertwined, and a true leader can community with people of all backgrounds, roles, and social identities. Communication must be done effectively for a business to succeed.

"A leader understands that he or she does not know everything and is always willing to learn," Alton P. Hobbs Jr. said. "Always being open to learning new skills and adapting to new circumstances are characteristics a great leader must-have."

Hobbs stated that it's easy to become overly confident when you're in a leadership role, but great leaders know there is always room for improvement. A leader knows that he or she will not be correct 100-percent of the time and being able to accept that and adapt is a major part of leading.

Finally, Alton P. Hobbs Jr. explained that all great leaders display gratitude. Gratitude is a quality that has been linked to reduced anxiety and depression and superior sleep. Being grateful can result in a clearer head, which is necessary when solving problems and accomplishing difficult tasks. Gratitude is a quality that improves the life of the leader and all of those surrounding him or her.
