As many already know, the fashion industry can be rigorous and challenging to get your start, often dissuading several people to never commit to trying. However, Natalie Brown and NMB New York are taking that chance and forging their own path in the world of fashion. Brown wanted to create clothing that was striking. After learning more about the process and facts like 92 million tons of waste comes from the fashion industry each year and that it can take up to 30-40 years for clothes to decompose, Brown wanted to make a change. Following graduating from Parsons School of Design with honors in Fashion Design and Elon University in Art and Entrepreneurship, the Peachtree City (GA) native decided to turn her long-time dream into a reality. Inspired to design innovative sustainable clothing that people would be excited to wear, NMB New York was created.

Eager to make an impact on the fashion industry, Brown is turning heads with her stand-out clothing line. NMB New York is rebranding the idea of upcycling by taking vintage, thrifted, and other clothing, deconstructing them, and turning them into luxury fashion. Sourcing clothing from vintage shops, thrift stores, and other outlets, the main pieces of clothing in NMB's line are the Unisex Reversible T-shirt Puffer Jackets, made entirely of t-shirts.

NMB's upcycled original pieces are innovative solutions to a fashionably cleaner world. Using thrifted clothing, which are purchased and then deconstructed to make each and every NMB original, heavily decreases the amount of discarded materials and waste being put into landfills each year. In turn, the need for new/raw materials decreases significantly, which as a result, helps reduce air pollution, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and can often conserve global resources. It takes about 700 gallons of water in order to make a single cotton t-shirt, whereas using a pre-existing t-shirt to make something new requires nearly no water at all. A common misconception is that all donated clothing is reused, however, only 10% actually gets sold. Buying clothing from Thrift Stores aids in water preservation, reduces chemical pollution, decreases landfill waste, and helps to lower your carbon footprint.

These eye-catching pieces of clothing embody not only the idea of upcycling, but also the idea of empowerment in clothing. In an interview, Brown referred to the quote "look good, feel good, do good" as crucial to the creation of NMB. Clothing has a tremendous effect on one's own mental process, influencing the ways they feel, think, and act. In areas such as confidence and abstract thinking, clothing can give one the empowerment to be at their very best. People wearing NMB originals will not only feel good that they are reducing waste, but will also be empowered by the fact that they look good! NMB New York's upcycled pieces are guaranteed to turn heads.

Brown knows how much clothing can affect someone's self esteem. During quarantine in March of 2020, Brown realized she didn't feel like herself wearing sweats everyday while sewing for her Parsons's graduating thesis. She came to the conclusion that when she used to dress-up, the benefit was for herself rather than for others. With this in mind, she created a variety of ‘self-care' labels for each piece, reminding people that they are special regardless of what they are wearing. The labels can be found with sayings such as ‘Do you know how cool you are?' or ‘You are one of a kind'.

The NMB New York collection is currently comprised of the Unisex Reversible T-shirt Puffer Jackets, which can be purchased in either white or black in a variety of themes, and an assortment of baseball caps with bustiers coming soon. The current puffer jackets feature an assortment of vintage logos-primarily focused on bands and music adding to the unique design of each and every item. Each unisex jacket gives the customer their own expressive freedom to wear it however they please, because unlike other puffer jackets, NMB's items are reversible with a solid color look on the inside. The whole process of creating each jacket is multiple weeks in the making. It takes many pieces of upcycled clothing to make one NMB Original. The fabric (thrifted, vintage and other clothing) is normally purchased from numerous different sources. Each upcycled garment is hand selected, checked for stains or blemishes, and carefully deconstructed in order to create each curated NMB original piece in the most fashionably responsible way possible.
