The Man Who Cut Through the Business Hardships of the Pandemic

It's more than just a haircut. As Sam Chulpayev perceives it, barbering is about creating genuine relationships with clients by offering more for less, leading to an unforgettable customer experience. As a professional barber with more than 20 years in the business, Sam seizes this industry by staying ahead and keeping tabs with consistency and innovation and using them as his tools in scaling his business. With five branches sprawled over New York City, Sam unceasingly gears himself with the vision of keeping his business on the front line despite the pandemic.

An immigrant from Uzbekistan, Sam did not have things simple when he came to America. A college dropout, he persisted by working as a barber from shop to shop, slowly acquiring competent skills that led him to open his own when he reached 33 and becoming his boss. "I knew I could do better than the people I have worked for the past decade. My 15 years of experience taught me to become investment-oriented by constantly refining my business based on clients' feedback," he explains, adding, "My establishments are renowned as among the most beautiful establishments in the world." His successes came when he chose to work around his life and stood firmly behind his visions.

Scaling to a New Level

Sam recognized the need to expand his company, Made Man Barbershop when they refused clients more than they could handle in a day. His 4-seater barbershop was no longer enough as his clientele grew famous not only to locals but also to people from around the world who look forward to having a haircut in his salon when they visit NYC. He adapted to the situation by opening more branches to accommodate more customers. Sam developed a unique appointment system, making things easier for everyone. By focusing on where his target market can benefit, Sam was able to deliver quality service.

Scaling a business requires plenty of effort and time, but he managed to pull through with the right dose of motivation. "My vision comes first and foremost. To constantly know where I'm going is the most important for me," Sam says. As for his leadership quality, he claims that "My style is similar to that of Volkswagen. I am in the shop daily and personally see and understand my employees' situation. I have established a friendly but respectful relationship in which it is the job that brings us together and not of friendship." As a business owner, Sam must oversee his business first-hand to draw out ideas on enhancing his management abilities.

As Sam expanded his horizons, he created two hair supplement brands at the start of the pandemic for men and women after receiving a plethora of inquiries about hair care and growth. "I've seen too many clients struggling with the concern of losing hair. I was giving free advice which helped many of my clients and at some point, I realized that there is a potential market for this," Sam reveals. He partnered with an Israeli doctor and pharmacists who developed a revolutionary technology, all-natural, herbal and sustainable that enables hair growth and prevents hair loss. The supplements, Pro-From Endure for men and Rewise for women, were well-received by the consumers locally and internationally with plenty of positive feedback.

Staying Relevant Amid Pandemic

It was a devastating blow for Sam when the pandemic struck, but this impediment did not dampen his character. "I am trying every way possible to thrive in these economic conditions," Sam discloses. He took the initiative to install safety measures in his shops by investing in ultraviolet lights to prevent viral and bacterial infections and UV sanitizing stations for disinfecting their tools. Partitions are seen in stations to ensure the safety of his staff and clients. A smart innovation that he recently implemented was to mobilize his barbershop using a truck and travel from building to building to serve one consumer at a time. "I am super innovative and my mind is always racing on how to deliver exceptional service to my clients," said Sam.

Passion Over Profit

Sam valued the quality of service that his business gives to his revered clients. He wanted clients to enjoy commendable services at reasonable prices so that they could keep coming back for more. Having a unique and relaxing atmosphere invites more people to come in and appreciate how nice it can be to visit a barbershop. Considered as Sam's forte, he never fails to offer free tips and advice on hair care. "My advice is to do your research, take your vitamins and supplements. Buy organic natural hair oil such as almond oil or Moroccan oil. There are studies on the positive effects of iodine on hair as well," Sam suggests.

Advice on Struggling Entrepreneurs

It is never a simple journey for a start-up entrepreneur. Sam went through ordeals himself when he founded his business. "Concentrate on your niche and scale on your consumer base as much as possible rather than trying to grab every single consumer you can," Sam emphasizes. After identifying the target market, hard work and consistency should follow. When it came to scaling his establishment, he became overburdened and realized the importance of delegation. "I know the worth of my time. Proper delegation is key to an effective expansion. I hire people to do other tasks so I could concentrate on more important issues," he says.

Despite the threats of the pandemic, Sam never gave up. "Keep trying things. I operate from the standpoint of a diversified portfolio," he asserts. Just like most successful entrepreneurs, they tried multiple business ideas before reaching the summit. Most importantly, there will always be prospects waiting for discovery. "In every losing situation, there is an opportunity for a win. I would say find that opportunity," Sam recommends. It is, after all, more than just a haircut for Sam. Because what he offered to his clients enabled him to achieve what he has become today.
