The market for astrology and psychic services is big and getting bigger. This is partly due to fact that these services are very popular with young people. The mystic services industry is now getting an estimated valuation at more than $2 billion by some industry watchers.

The mystic services industry includes astrology, mediumship, palmistry and numerology, as well as other related services. Interestingly, consumers who do not affiliate with a religion tend to make up the largest segment of mystic service consumers. Since an increasing segment of people in the United States are not participating in religion, this is a positive for the industry's future prospects. It has been estimated that 35% of millennials, for instance, do not practice any organized religion.

Large amounts of the population have used a psychic at least once. One estimate puts the figure at 15%. Industry observers indicate that the female population uses mystic service at two times the rate of men. Industry related revenue is expected to reach $2.3 billion by year 2024. Some psychics now refer to themselves as being in the wellness field and refer to themselves as 'intuitives' or 'intuitive healers.' A New York Times article referred to psychics as 'wellness' coaches.

While some view mystic services as weird or silly, other people take it quite seriously. For instance, despite a fair amount of skepticism as to its' effectiveness, there has been numerous instances of law enforcement consulting psychics to help solve crimes. Wall Street traders and some well known business leaders over the decades have been known to use such services prior to making important business decisions.

Young people often turn to astrology when it comes to dating decisions. One recent article indicated the wrong astrological sign as a top dating screening tool for millennials. A 2019 MTV Insights survey indicated that 25% of the people surveyed would reject a date due to their astrological sign while 34% said they use astrology in their dating decision making to some degree. Some dating apps allow users to sort possible dates based on astrological signs.

Although those people without religious affiliations account for a lot of the growth of mystic services, use of these services is not confined to non-religious people. For instance, many people who identify as Christians also believe in astrology, psychics and other paranormal type beliefs. It has been estimated that four-in-ten Americans believe in psychics and 29% believe in astrology.
