Attendees Heard from State Legislators, Family Law Attorneys and More About Proposed Bill to Get Rid of Lifetime Alimony in Florida
KISSIMMEE, FL / ACCESSWIRE / February 5, 2019 / The Florida Family Law Reform PAC, a Florida state registered political committee (PAC), just hosted a statewide conference to educate the community about its mission to get rid of lifetime alimony. About 100 attendees came to the day-long event to learn about a newly proposed bill that will help change the current law. The event was held at the Holiday Inn Orlando SW Celebration in Kissimmee on Saturday, February 2.
Speakers included state legislators, pro-reform family law attorneys, and other reform advocates from all over the state. The conference covered a variety of family law reform, legislative and legal topics and was a must-attend event for all supporters of family law reform.
Guests were able to learn more about the proposed bill and hear why Florida should join the overwhelming majority of states who have gotten rid of lifetime alimony. Raymond Blacklidge, House candidate 2018 and 2020, discussed the legislative process, including how a bill goes through the system from the very beginning all the way to the governor's desk. Pro-reform attorneys Alan Elkins and Mikaela Nix talked about legalities surrounding the proposed bill and what you can do now if you need to seek an alimony modification in court. Deborah Leff-Kelapire with Florida Family Law Reform PAC shared ways to get involved and help spread the word about the mission. Michael McAuliffe, PAC Chairman, explained the legislative committee.
''This is such an important issue involving an outdated system that needs to change,'' said Michael McAuliffe, PAC Chairman. ''Florida is one of the few states that still has permanent alimony, which can create financial hardships for ex-spouses paying alimony who lose their jobs, become ill and cannot work, or reach retirement age. A formula-based alimony calculation has been proven to work in other states and would help save both parties thousands in legal fees.''
To help spread accurate information about their mission, the group has released a documentary titled: ''Life Sentence-Florida's Alimony Problem'' along with a 2-minute trailer.
