Refinishing vs Replacing

The price of a new bathtub starts from $300, surprisingly bathtub refinishing (a.k.a reglazing, resurfacing) is around the same cost. So, why should anyone consider reglazing an old bathtub, while a new one seems as accessible? Truth is, removing and disposing of a bathtub can end up costing you times and times more than refinishing one. Replacing a bathtub is complicated, since you may need to hire a plumber and a tile man, as the removal of the tub can tare out parts of the wall and harm the plumbing, in total exceeding the cost of refinishing a tub.

DIY vs Professionals

With a simple online search one can find kits that are offered for reglazing bathtubs, but would not be recommended as the job requires professional attention and custom tools. We talked to Teet Maidla from Amazing Refinishing, whose company offers tub refinishing services from their Raleigh, NC and Tampa, FL locations, and have trained professionals covering areas across the U.S. in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and even California. Maidla explained the complications one may run into by performing tub resurfacing on their own. Apparently, the DIY kits do not use high quality products, plus applying the chemicals need years of practice.

"Using DIY kits at home may cost one much more since people end up still having to call a professional to fix their tub," adds Maidla.

Amazing Refinishing work is performed by professionals whom many have over twelve years of practice and offer a ten year guarantee for their services. Maidla points out that they differentiate from their competitors by taking extra time for preparations.

"Amazing Refinishing assures that no mess is left behind, that by covering all of the surface with plastic wrap so dust or extensive paint would not travel to or stain unnecessary areas," adds Maidla.

Before applying the low VOC paint, they use sand paper and cleaning products on the tub to remove any leftover grime and gloss, resulting an old bathtub looking brand new. Since chemicals are being used during reglazing, all toxic substances are removed by powerful ventilation systems.

Bathtub Reglazing vs Lay Over Bathtubs

Lay over bathtub is another option to choose from when updating the look of your tub. Unfortunately, it has its cons when compared to bathtub reglazing. The plastic that lays over the bathtub is much more expensive and at the end of the day may cause a smelly tub after water and moisture sticks in between the old tub and new lining. This would not be a problem for tub reglazing, as the VOC chemicals are directly applied to the old tub and do not allow any extra humidity to affect it.

The Bathtub refinishing can be applied in any color being suitable for tiles on floors, walls or countertops. Plus, besides all other tubs, it is also fitting for cast iron bathtubs, which porcelain coat can get worn out, but reglazing will persist its quality. Taking care of the refinished bathtub is as easy as maintaining a new tub, by cleaning it with mild products with no bleach, which ensures the undamaged shiny new look.
