When asked about the most important things that he has learned during his successful career, Dr. Bahat said that an accurate diagnosis is definitely the top lesson.
"It is key for successful treatment," he said, adding that he has also realized over the years that patients will often accept a suggested treatment without asking questions about the procedure.
With that in mind, Dr. Bahat said that if he could give advice to prospective dental implant patients, he would suggest that they ask their periodontist numerous questions.
"Ask how many similar types of procedures the clinician has performed, as well as their success rate," he said, adding that patients should also ask to see results of other similar patients.
"Ask how long they've been performing that procedure and ask to speak to other patients who have undergone that treatment-recent patients and past patients from five to 10 years before."
As for his aspirations for the next five years, Dr. Bahat said he feels the biggest challenge is to create treatment protocols that include the new findings regarding skull changes and craniofacial growth and its effects on prosthetic and surgical implant reconstruction.
"These normal physiological changes of the face directly influence implant placement and the thought process of treatment," he said.
When asked to make one prediction for the future, Dr. Bahat said he believes that changes in treatment protocol as well as developing techonologies will be accelerated.
While there will be more technological developments in regards to surgical and implant reconstruction, Dr. Bahat said there will probably also be failures due to the wrong treatment.
