Z Trim Announces Commencement of Third-Party Human Study of the effects of BFG Soluble Dietary Fiber on the Gut Microbiome
MUNDELEIN, IL / ACCESSWIRE / July 8, 2015 / Z Trim Holdings, Inc. ("ZTH") (PINKSHEETS:ZTHO News), an AgriTech company providing value-added ingredients to a variety of industries, today announced that its soluble fiber ingredient BFG will be studied as part of the University of Albertas FYBER (Feed Your gut Bacteria morE fibeR) study. The end-points will seek to reveal the effects that high doses of dietary fiber have on the gut microbiome specifically and obesity + metabolic diseases in general.
"BFG is a highly functional fiber with prebiotic activity that is extremely well-tolerated, which means it can be added to foods in far greater amounts than most other commercial dietary fibers and supplements. We are therefore thrilled to participate in this first-ever human study of our BFG. said Z Trim CEO Ed Smith, While there are many published clinical studies of the health benefits of arabinoxylans, a study of our specific long-chain and highly-branched version are largely missing from the literature. Most scientific references to arabinoxylans refer to less-complex versions that we believe are less effective than what Z Trims BFG can offer. We believe this study will demonstrate why we are so excited to be able to offer arabinoxylans for the first time at a commercial scale and at a reasonable price."
"Obesity significantly increases the risk of developing numerous diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. said Dr. Jens Walter, Chair for Nutrition, Microbes and Gastrointestinal Health at the University of Alberta. We therefore require nutritional strategies that induce satiety while limiting energy availability, using food ingredients that would ideally have additional beneficial metabolic and immunological effects. There is emerging evidence that dietary fiber modulate gut microbiota composition and function, and thereby induce benefits to host physiology and immune functions in humans. However, we do not yet understand all the consequences for the body of microbial fiber fermentation in the gut, and the mechanisms by which benefits arise. Our goal in this study is to systematically investigate the effects of different types of fiber on inflammation and measures of metabolism in overweight/obese humans. The potential for dietary fiber to improve systemic inflammation and other metabolic factors through the mechanism of the gut bacteria could offer a promising solution to a growing epidemic."
"We were very excited when Dr. Walter contacted Z Trim about participating in the University of Albertas study. We view Dr. Walter as a leader in the rising field of understanding why gut bacteria matters for our health. He is a co-author of some very novel papers that compare the microbiomes of uncontacted tribes in the Amazon and individuals in rural Papua New Guinea to that of the typical western-diet consuming person, said Kyle Hanah, VP of Technology at Z Trim. Interestingly, the papers conclude that the diversity of gut microbes in the aboriginals, where there are far less instances of obesity and cancer, greatly exceeded those of the western subjects. This higher bacterial diversity in the gut of non-industrialized humans might be caused in part through high fiber consumption, which likely exceeds 50 grams a day in these populations. These findings suggest that the deficiency of complex non-digestible carbohydrates in the western diet might contribute to a depletion of the modern microbiome, and it provides a rationale for the high fiber doses that will be used in the FYBER study. Taken together with some other papers published in the last year, we believe that the scientific community could be beginning to connect the dots on why the gut microbiome could be the key to answering the question of why metabolic diseases are increasing so rampantly in the west, and the role that fiber could play in counteracting that trend. As a prebiotic that is slow to ferment and that we do not believe has the adverse GI side-effects at large doses of typical dietary fibers, we believe our BFG could be a very useful way to stimulate the proliferation of good and varied flora in our guts. High doses of BFG could potentially be a new and inexpensive way to help win the war on obesity and other chronic metabolic diseases, among other health benefits."
ABOUT Z TRIM
Z Trim Holdings, Inc. (www.ztrim.com) is an AgriTech company that owns existing, and has developed new, products and processes to transform biomass for uses in the food and industrial markets. Using revolutionary technology designed to produce value-added ingredients across virtually all food industry categories, the Companys food division currently sells a line of products that can help food manufacturers reduce their costs and solve many production problems. These all-natural ingredients, among other things, help to reduce fat and calories, add fiber, provide shelf-stability, prevent oil migration, and add binding capacity -- all without degrading the taste and texture of the finished products. Perhaps most significantly, Z Trim's products can help extend yields, and thereby increase its customers' gross margins. The Company's industrial division, opened in 2012, offers eco-friendly ingredients to oil drilling, hydraulic fracturing, petroleum coke, steel/aluminum, paper and other industries. These industrial ingredients are highly functional in applications for adhesives, binders, viscofiers and emulsifiers.
