NMS Residential

SANTA MONICA, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 26, 2018 / From its humble beginnings as a California seaside resort town at the turn of the Twentieth Century, Santa Monica has grown into a city with eight distinct neighborhoods. NMS Residential examines these neighborhoods highlighting the characteristics that their residents and visitors alike enjoy.

Downtown Santa Monica

The Downtown neighborhood is home to Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place, the largest shopping areas in the city. The many restaurants, shops, and hotels keep the area lively on California's sunny days. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, a farmer's market and street performers give the neighborhood more of a local feel.

Main Street

Main Steet isn't just a street, it is also a neighborhood with an artsy, laid-back style. You'll find the Edgemar Center for the Arts on Main Street along with the city's highest concentration of coffee shops. Patio-lined cafes, indie boutiques, and trendy restaurants and bars line the streets. Main Street has had a recent barrage of international restaurants like the Aussie Pie Kitchen and the Jinya Ramen Bar.

Mid-City

The furthest inland neighborhood, Mid-City is bordered by Wilshire and Olympic Boulevards and serviced by two Expo Line stations. Santa Monica residents and visitors alike frequent the neighborhood for its arts and entertainment. Mid-City is home to Bergamot Station (recently renamed the 26th Street Art Center), a former railroad station turned into several art galleries, and The Broad Stage performing arts center.

Montana Avenue

Although largely residential and tree-lined, Montana Avenue manages to offer at least 150 retailers and restaurants within 10 blocks. The shops tend to be more locally owned and high-end. You may spot celebrities who like to frequent shops like The Pink Chicken and Moon Dance Jewelry Gallery. This neighborhood is also convenient to the hustle and bustle of downtown. The beautiful and historic Aero Theatre is a cozy yet popular cinema showing classics and independent releases.

Ocean Park

Extending southeast from the Santa Monica Pier, the Ocean Park neighborhood is mostly residential but also features even more galleries, coffee shops, and boutique shopping. The Santa Monica Airport serves private jet owners and has a fascinating Museum of Flying, observation decks, and gardens. The bi-monthly antique market draws a huge crowd. The airport's old hangars are also a popular destination for large-scale events and fundraisers.

Pico

Pico runs parallel to I-10. It ends at the beach and links to Santa Monica High School and Santa Monica College. It is said to be the city's most diverse neighborhood. Local businesses recently paired with the nonprofit Beautify Earth organization to have murals created on the sides of buildings. The area has several small galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and live music venues.

Pier/Ocean Avenue

Pastel colored hotels, Palisades Park, and Tongva Park make Ocean Avenue one of Santa Monica's most iconic places. Unique hotels and open-air restaurants line the avenue. The famous Santa Monica Pier is nearby with a vintage amusement park, aquarium, and live music. Ocean Front Walk is home to the Original Muscle Beach with its assortment of workout equipment.

Wilshire Boulevard

Wilshire begins at Ocean Avenue and runs through the city into Beverly Hills and Downtown Los Angeles. Ending at Palisades Park, it borders Third Street Promenade and Douglas Park with its natural landscaping, reflecting pools, and playing fields. Mexican restaurants and designer consignment shops are prominent businesses in the neighborhood as are popular casual eateries and bars and lounges.
