A six-hour indoor cycling event to benefit Ovarian Cancer Research

San Francisco, CA / ACCESSWIRE / October 27, 2014 / Be the Difference Foundation announces its second annual Wheel to Survive San Francisco fundraiser to benefit ovarian cancer research which will take place on Sunday, November 2, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Bay Club Redwood Shores in Redwood City, CA.

Wheel to Survive is a high-energy, uplifting, six-hour indoor cycling event that allows hundreds of participants, usually in teams of six, to ride and raise money for ovarian cancer research. Many of the riders participate to honor friends, family and loved ones who have been affected by the disease. Each rider raises at least $250 to participate and rides for anywhere from one to six hours. A silent auction and vendor fair also take place during the event.

With no reliable early detection test available for ovarian cancer, the statistics are staggering. This year alone, 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 14,000 women will die from the disease. Ovarian cancer is called "the cancer that whispers" because symptoms are usually subtle or even nonexistent.

"By bringing this event back to the Bay Area, we can make a real difference in the lives of women who are currently fighting or may someday find themselves in the battle with ovarian cancer," said Dr. Laura Shawver, Wheel to Survive San Francisco Event Chair and ovarian cancer survivor. "As an ovarian cancer survivor and a cancer researcher, I want to do whatever I can to change the statistics of ovarian cancer and put an end to this disease."

Be the Difference Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed by four ovarian cancer survivors in different phases of survivorship who all share the same passion, to "Be the Difference" in the fight against ovarian cancer. The Foundation's mission is to help women increase their chance of survival of ovarian cancer by raising awareness and money to fund programs for women fighting ovarian cancer today and to provide research dollars for a cure.

In 2014, Be the Difference Foundation held Wheel to Survive events in Dallas and Austin and has raised over $480,000 so far. In its two year existence, the Foundation has raised more than $888,000 for ovarian cancer research. These dollars fund programs aimed at improving survival for women battling ovarian cancer and have been donated to the Clearity Foundation's molecular profiling service, the University of Pennsylvania's immunotherapy research and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's research to identify genomic alterations for patients without BRCA gene mutations.
