The San Diego Business Journal released The Best of the Bar 2014 on June 30, 2014. One-hundred and forty six firms and solo practices in the San Diego region cast more than a thousand votes. Out of this voting process, two-hundred and one attorneys were selected as San Diego's most distinguished for their excellent services. The profiles of the lawyers reflect a variety of practices, from family law to intellectual property.

Smaha nationally practices Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and Asset Preservation Strategies and well as an extensive practice represented businesses in financial transactions and litigation. His extensive background includes a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Redlands, and a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego. He was a published member of the University of San Diego Law Review and was admitted to the California Bar in 1980. He was a law clerk for the San Diego Bankruptcy Court for the Honorable Judge Herbert Katz and a law clerk for the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel.
Smaha is admitted to practice in all California Courts, U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts (Southern, Central, Eastern and Northern Districts and in many states outside of California), U.S. Court of Claims, U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
