New 3D tech enables faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment of foot pain

The scanner is one of only three of its kind in use for functional orthotics nationwide – and the only one in Texas.
Most scanners used by foot specialists today operate on a concept of “white light,” where the scanner captures a 2D image of the sole, much like a photocopier. Doctors use that image to diagnose certain foot conditions and create a template for custom-designed orthotics. The OrthoCARE scanner operates on a digital mapping process that takes into account the entire foot, not just the sole.
Extremely lightweight and portable, the scanner connects wirelessly to a handheld tablet that the doctor uses to initiate the scan and upload and view 3D, 360 degree images of the patient’s foot. They can be shared immediately with the patient and sent wirelessly to the orthotics company, cutting the waiting time for custom-designed orthotics in half, while enabling a “better fit.”In addition, the 3D scanner can give people a more precise idea of their foot size. Shoe sizing used to be done with a metal slide tool that measured the length and width of the foot, but couldn’t accurately account for girth. The new scanner accounts for all three, quickly and automatically, with less room for human error.
