Houston, TX / myprgenie.com / ACCESSWIRE / Jun 17, 2014 / The Brookwood Community, a non-profit residential facility and vocational program for adults with disabilities located in Brookshire, Texas, has received a $5,000 donation from the NextEra Energy Foundation and a matching grant of energy consulting services from Gexa Energy Solutions, LLC, an affiliate of Gexa Energy, LP, a leading retail electricity provider in Texas.

The Brookwood Community, a customer of Gexa Energy, plans to use the donation to upgrade its facilities to light-emitting diode (LED) lighting that will help reduce their utility bill by 15-20 percent, resulting in estimated annual savings of $60,000.  Gexa Energy Solutions will perform an energy audit of the Brookwood Community's campus, which consists of more than 20 buildings, and provide consulting services to improve insulation and the efficiency of mechanical systems.

"As an energy provider focused on sustainability, there is a tremendous amount of synergy between our business and the measures the Brookwood Community is taking to improve power conservation," said Greg Hanlon, vice president and general manager of energy services, Gexa Energy Solutions.  "We're delighted that we could offer our expertise to assist them in their goal to conserve energy and increase their environmental sustainability while helping them fulfill their very important organizational mission."

"Brookwood Community has reduced its costs for gas, electricity and water by $145,000 since 2010 due to Renewable Energy Friends which was created to provide green sustainable energy to the Brookwood Community," said Milt Howard, founder of the Renewable Energy Friends of Brookwood.  Brookwood's goal is to effectively reduce its utility costs through energy efficiency programs and the installation of wind, solar and water plants on its 485 acre campus.  The Brookwood Community recently installed a wind turbine and is in the midst of a fund raising campaign to raise $13 million for additional facility and program upgrades.

"We're committed to energy conservation and have made tremendous progress in our efforts to reduce our utility costs," said Travis Duncan, development officer, the Brookwood Community.  "We look forward to using this donation from NextEra Energy Foundation and Gexa Energy Solutions to expand our environmental sustainability programs."

A God-centered educational, residential, and entrepreneurial community for adults with disabilities, the Brookwood Community provides an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging, and demands dignity and respect for adults with disabilities.  The Brookwood Community was founded by Mrs. Yvonne T. Streit in 1985 for adults with disabilities because her own daughter was facing these challenges.
