Gulf Resources closed up 21.35% on about 2.8 million shares traded on Monday. The stock was a big advancer on the NASDAQ after the company reported higher earnings and revenue in its first quarter. Gulf Resources reported net income of $4.3 million, or 11 cents a share, more than double $1.9 million, or 5 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue climbed 14% year over year to $25.6 million.

Apple shares closed up 1.24% on about 7.6 million shares traded. The company is close to paying a record $3.2 billion for Beats Electronics as an entrance into music streaming and headphone gear. Earlier this year Beats launched a music service.

Shares of VALE closed up 4.16% on about 26.5 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest gainers on the NYSE. The company had no significant news except an article written favorably about the company on Monday. Last month the Brazilian Superior Justice Tribunal voted 3-1 in favor of Vale on 22.3 billion real ($10 billion) of disputed taxes on foreign profits from the period between 1996 and 2002.
