In response to an article published by WishTV.com, Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, says that athlete-patient friendships can help raise awareness about children's health conditions

BROOKLYN, NY / myprgenie.com /ACCESSWIRE / April 8, 2014 / Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, responds to an article published on March 28 by WishTV.com, which highlights the ever-growing friendship between a Michigan State University senior basketball star and an 8-year-old cancer patient.

Adreian Payne, a notable senior MSU basketball player, met 8-year-old Lacey Holsworth of St. Johns, Michigan, two years ago when MSU basketball players visited Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Since then, Payne has taken Holsworth under his wing, giving her story and the general childhood cancer cause a national platform.

After seeing Adreian hoist the Big Ten Championship net with Lacey, a Fort Wayne, Indiana couple was inspired to create a Twitter account in the hopes of raising and collecting donations to help Lacey with medical bills or other health-related expenses.

Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, says that the national sports scene is a great and effective medium to raise awareness for health causes. "The friendship and bond that exists between Adreian and Lacey is so genuine. When anyone hears of their story, you can't help but feel compelled to get involved," says Gabriel. "Athletes, musicians, actors and actresses and public figures have the capacity to bring these causes into the national spotlight. Because of this particular story, one couple was driven to fundraise for Lacey. The power of this correlation is something that could be beneficial for all causes."
