Macys Announces New President; Caterpillar Inc. Avoids $2.4 Billion in U.S. Taxes

Macy’s shares closed up a modest 1.90% but hit a new high of $60.88 during intra-day trading. The Company has named former chief merchandising officer, Jeffrey Gennette as the company’s new president. Gennette has been serving the company in his former role since 2009. In his new role, he will supervise the company’s marketing and website related operations, apart from being in charge of Macy’s day-to-day merchandising activities.

Shares of DFC Global Corp. closed up 5.23% on about 27 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest gainers on the NASDAQ. The company entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by an affiliate of Lone Star Funds. Stockholders would receive $9.50 a share in a cash transaction totaling around $1.3 billion. The per-share price is a 12.3% premium to the company's 30-day volume-weighted average stock price.

Shares of Caterpillar closed up 2.83% on about 9.4 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest gainers on the NYSE and hit a new high of $102.76 during intra-day trading. The company avoided $2.4 billion in U.S. taxes over a 13-year period by shifting profits to a Swiss affiliate. That was the main assertion of a Senate subcommittee majority report and the subject of a hearing on Tuesday.

Shares of SPLS closed up 4.90% on nearly 20 million shares traded. The stock was one of the most active stocks on the NASDAQ on Wednesday. Staples Advantage Canada has launched a "Clean Your Office Day" campaign to help people clean up their office space on April 25th.  The company will be offering special prices on a wide range of cleaning supplies throughout the month of April.
