BROOKLYN, NY / myprgenie.com / ACCESSWIRE / April 4, 2014 / Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Brooklyn pediatric care center, responds to an article published on March 27 by Boston.com, which presents data on the incremental presence of autism among today's youth.

According to an article published on March 27th by Boston lifestyle health titled "US autism estimate rises to 1 in 68 children", the number of children diagnosed with autism has seen a dramatic increase.

Since 2007, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) began using health and school records to see which children met the criteria for autism, even if they hadn't been formally diagnosed. Researchers then calculated how common autism was. Using this method, researchers have found estimates of: 1 in 150 children (2007), 1 in 100 (2009), 1 in 88 (2012), and 1 in 68 for 2014.

The estimates have gone up 30% in comparison to 2012, and more than doubled since 20, effecting roughly 1.2 million Americans under the age of 21. However, the numbers are derived from changing circumstances. In the past few years, the qualifications for a child to be considered autistic have become milder. Currently, most cases are diagnoses based on children's behaviors.

The article states that children as young as two years of age can be diagnosed with autism. A majority of the cases are diagnosed between the ages of four and eight. Experts say that if autism is treated in the earlier phases, it very likely to be prevented from evolving into far more complicated stages.

Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Brooklyn pediatric care center, says that parents must be vigilant of any warning signs in their own children. "Any disease, illness, etc. is better treated if medical intervention has been applied since the beginning stages," Gabriel explains. "Families should make sure that their children are up-to-date on all of their regular check-ups. It's better to stay alert and be aware of any warning behavioral signs."
