BROOKLYN, NY / myprgenie.com / ACCESSWIRE / March 28, 2014 / Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, responds to an article published on February 24 by the New York Daily News, which takes a closer look into the mysterious, polio-like illness that has affected approximately 20 children since 2012 in California.
According to a February 24 article published by the New York Daily News, titled "Doctors puzzled by strange, polio-like illness paralyzing California kids," about 20 California children have been affected with a mysterious, polio-like illness that has left them suffering weakness, fever, respiratory issues and paralysis in at least one limb.
Dr. Keith Van Haren, who has handled several of these cases, says what is most troublesome about this mystery illness is the rapidity of it. "It happens very fast," he explains. "The worrisome thing is that all of the children we've seen so far have shown minimal recovery."
The California Department of Public Health is reviewing the 20 cases and says that, as of now, the investigation is ongoing.
Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, believes this illness is worrisome and that parents should be vigilant of any warning signs. "What's alarming is that the poliovirus, which is what this mystery illness most closely represents, has been eradicated in the United States for decades," he explains. "Parents should keep a watchful eye. If they do see any sort of onset of weakness in their child, they should seek medical attention immediately."
