FAYETTEVILLE, NC / March 27, 2014 / For the fourth year, McKee Homes owners Julie Russo and Pat McKee are committed to working with the Alzheimer's Association to move toward the vision of a world without Alzheimer's. "This fight is very personal to us," said Julie Russo. "Pat watched his father slip away from this devastating disease, and we honor his memory with consistent support of the Alzheimer's Association, through this walk, and with our Joe McKee Memorial Fund." A portion of the profit from every home built by McKee Homes goes to this fund.
The 2014 Walk to End Alzheimer's is set for September 6th in the Liberty Hill subdivision of Fayetteville. Chaired by Julie Russo and Susan Bishop-Thomas, the Walk Planning Committee is looking for some new faces. "There's a place for everyone on a committee like this, regardless of your background," Susan Bishop-Thomas explained. "We have 'out-in-front' roles, like recruiting teams and community outreach, and 'behind-the-scenes' jobs, like planning the route and logistics."
Walk committee meetings are often held through conference calls; the committee members do not always meet in person. Updates and task lists are kept online and much of the communication is through email. "We are respectful of people's time," Russo assured, "We all share the passion and the commitment for the cause, but we are all volunteering to make this Walk happen." The Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. In Fayetteville, the Walk to End Alzheimer's benefits the Eastern North Carolina chapter of the Association which serves 51 counties in North Carolina, providing support for caregivers, community education, and physician outreach. Proceeds from the Walk will also benefit the National Alzheimer's Association, the world's leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's research, care and support. The association's mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
