The Tema Conter Memorial Trust, an organization that provides peer and psychological support to Canada's first responders and public safety organizations (paramedics, firefighters, police, RCMP, military personnel).
On February 22, 2014, TEMA held its 13th Annual Heroes Tribute Gala, with special guest, Enrico Colantoni who is the TEMA national spokesman (Canadian Actor well-known for his role on the series, Flashpoint). The Tema Conter Memorial Trust announced on February 18, 2014 that they are launching a cross-Canada PTSD awareness tour. The 2014 Heroes are Human Tour will commence in St. John's, Newfoundland on May 5, 2014 and travel coast to coast, ending in Toronto, Ontario on July 18, 2014. The Tour will visit 48 towns and cities across Canada, hosting 2-hour community-based educational events highlighting the impact of the psychological stressors of acute, cumulative, post-traumatic stress and vicarious trauma and how these stressors impact front-line responders.
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, PTSD is caused by a psychologically traumatic event involving actual or threatened death or serious injury to oneself or others. In some cases, seeing another person harmed or killed, or learning that a close friend or family member is in serious danger has caused the development of PTSD symptoms.
PTSD can cause a person to experience flashbacks, anxiety, depression or insomnia.
Aaron Waxman and Associates hopes that 2014 Heroes are Human Tour opens the conversation about the seriousness of post-traumatic stress disorder and fosters a sense of understanding with respect to the the impact of PTSD on Canada's military, police officers, emergency personnel and all front-line responders.
