Dr. Green of Green Chiropractic in Houston, Texas recommends avoiding elliptical training, crunches, and leg presses because they contribute to low back pain.

Houston, TX, USA - February 7th, 2014 -- Dr. Greg Green of Green Chiropractic, a Houston chiropractor warns those who’ve made a New Year’s resolution to stay fit in 2014, that there are some exercises they should avoid. “In an effort to stay healthy, many people with a history of low back pain overlook the fact that some otherwise effective exercises can make their back pain worse,” explains Dr. Green.

Many who are optimistic about their plans to exercise in the New Year look to TV shows like "Celebrity Boot Camp" for inspiration. Hosted by E! News’ Giuliana Rancic, "Celebrity Boot Camp gives the inside scoop on how Brooke Burke, Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, and Miley Cyrus stay fit. However, it’s always a good idea to check with a doctor before beginning an exercise program.

Here are the Top 3 exercises people with a history of low back pain should avoid:

Elliptical Training - Elliptical training offers a low-impact, cardio exercise. It’s a stationary piece of equipment that simulates walking or running. Because of the way the equipment moves, it causes no pressure on the joints.
However, research conducted by the University of Waterloo found that even though it looks like the legs are moving back and forth, there is really more going on. The body actually twists more than it would when walking. It’s the side-to-side swish than can cause pain in the sacroiliac joints.

Crunches & Sit-Ups - Anyone with a history of disc injury should avoid crunches and sit-ups. That’s because the repetitive flex of the spine can awaken the sleeping giant of low back pain. "I recommend avoiding these exercises whether or not my patients have an old injury," says Dr. Green.

As each crunch or sit-up is repeated, tissue stresses and injury patterns begin to form. Pressure on the spine can squeeze bent discs and cause them to bulge. This bulging presses on the nerves in the spine, causing back pain.
Leg Presses - "I recommend against doing leg presses for the same reason that I recommend avoiding crunches," says Dr. Green. Leg presses also cause the spine to bend in a rounding motion that can cause back pain when the discs press on the nerves in the spine. "Try doing squats in the proper form instead of leg presses," recommends Dr. Green.

Chiropractic is an evidence-based healing art for the non-surgical management of musculoskeletal complaints related to the spine and extremities. Low back pain may come on suddenly, but there is usually an imbalance that, when left unchecked, can lead to pain. Correcting these imbalances, and making diet and lifestyle modifications, are the core of holistic chiropractic treatment.
