Molycorp, Inc. (NYSE: MCP) shares closed up 11.92 percent on over 35 million shares traded on Thursday. The stock posted one of the largest volume increases on the NYSE. The big move came after analyst Avinash Kant at DA Davidson upgraded the stock. He thinks company is "uniquely positioned" to become a dominant supplier in rare earth materials, and raised their price target for the stock from $6 to $8.

Fiat S.p.A. (OTC: FIATY) shares closed up 15.06 percent on Thursday with about 1.2 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest gainers in the OTC market and hit a new 52-week high of $9.55 during intra-day trading. The big move came after it was revealed that the Italian automaker will take full ownership of Chrysler. Fiat will buy a 41.5 percent stake held by a United Auto Workers union trust fund for $1.75 billion (about 1.35 billion euros) in cash and another $1.9 billion in extraordinary dividends. The deal is due to close by Jan. 20.

United States Steel Corp. (NYSE: X) shares closed up a modest 2.64 percent on Thursday with nearly 12 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest volume jumpers on the NYSE and hit a new 52-week high of $31.15 during intra-day trading. The big move came after KeyBanc upgraded the company from Hold to Buy and analyst Philip Gibbs gave the stock a price target of $37.

Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG) shares closed up 50.32 percent on Thursday with about 53 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest gainers on the NASDAQ and hit a new 52-week high of $2.33 during intra-day trading. The big move came after the company announced that it had met its projected fourth-quarter order targets, which totaled about $32 million.
