The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration will permit two aircraft limited flights to test the new battery design. "We won't allow the plane to return to service unless we're satisfied that the new design ensures the safety of the aircraft and its passengers," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood .The new design has to pass a series of tests before it is approved and the FAA will be closely involved in the certification process.
Plane buyers and operators expect the 787 to re-enter service in June. Boeing shares closed, at $84.16 on the New York Stock Exchange, up $1.22, or 1.5 percent and traded after hours at $84.44. Shares of the battery maker for Dreamliner, Japan's GS Yuasa Corp, climbed 0.9 percent in Tokyo this morning.
