ROCKVILLE, MD / ACCESSWIRE / May 15, 2019 / Attorneys A. Wray Fitch, IV and Tara Clary of Schochor, Federico and Staton, P.A. obtained a $2,045,213.51 verdict for their clients Patricia Bent and her husband, Lance Bent. The Honorable Sharon V. Burrell presided over the case against Dr. Navinder Sethi and Potomac Valley Orthopaedic Associates in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland.

Patricia Bent, now 64, worked as an ER and trauma nurse for decades. Mrs. Bent had successfully undergone previous back surgery for right-sided symptoms and returned to Dr. Sethi with left-sided symptoms. Dr. Sethi negligently recommended bilateral spine surgery, despite her having symptoms only on the left side. When operating on the asymptomatic right side of the spine, Dr. Sethi caused a tear in Mrs. Bent's dura, which ultimately leaked cerebrospinal fluid and caused permanent nerve damage. Mrs. Bent has no feeling on her right side from the waist down to her foot.

Attorney Fitch explains, "The case centered on the claim that Mrs. Bent's complication on the right side never should have happened because she should never have been given a bilateral procedure."

As a result of her injuries, the longtime caregiver now needs a caregiver of her own. She is no longer able to practice nursing in any capacity. She can only walk short distances with the aid of a four-wheeled walker, and she must use a wheelchair for longer distances. She cannot drive, and she has difficulty using stairs. She is unable to enjoy gardening, boating, fishing or other recreational activities she loved before the surgery.
