Luxoft and Vantage Power Launch VPVision Platform to Improve the Performance and Reliability of Hybrid & Electric Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Wednesday, 19 September 2018 04:00 AM

  • Platform Already Successfully Tested on Hybrid London Busses
  • VPVision leverages AWS IoT architecture to help reduce vehicle emissions

LONDON, UK / ACCESSWIRE / September 19, 2018 / Luxoft Holding, Inc (NYSE: LXFT), a global IT service provider, and Vantage Power, who design and manufacture technologies that connect and electrify powertrains in heavy-duty vehicles, today launch VPVision, a next-generation fleet performance and diagnostics platform.

The VPVision platform combines in-depth technical knowledge of hybrid and electric powertrain components, including lithium-ion batteries, with cloud based telemetry software. By leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as Amazon S3, Amazon Athena and Amazon Sagemaker, Luxoft built the software set that includes remote fault diagnostics, performance optimization, prognostics, geo-fencing and over-the-air software updates.

"Together with Vantage Power and using AWS, we have created a system that can provide incredible insights and value using the data from connected vehicles," said Sam Mantle, Managing Director of Digital Enterprise at Luxoft. "Within seconds, complex data is transformed in to actionable information and shown on the platform. For instance, the sensors know when a hybrid-electric vehicle is entering a low emissions zone and ensures its electric battery is fully charged ahead of time."

"Battery powered heavy-duty vehicles are increasingly common but successfully deploying and maintaining them at scale remains a challenge," said Alex Schey, CEO of Vantage Power. "Using real-world data from the in-service batteries, we've developed a model that detects a failure mode in the cloud - months earlier than we can today. We're excited about how this platform can be applied to battery technology in all sectors, to bring about a more robust and agile way of managing electric heavy-duty vehicles."

A successful pilot of the platform has been completed on the streets of London in a select number of hybrid buses with some of London's largest bus operators, and VPVision is now ready to be implemented in the growing number of hybrid and electric heavy-duty vehicles.

The platform helps OEMs reduce their aftermarket service and support costs for powertrain components and ancillary vehicle systems. Reporting and legislation compliance required to operate in cities around the world can be automated, and the risk of deploying new electrified technologies into service can be managed much more closely.

Built around a foundational Internet of Things (IoT) architecture, the solution leverages AWS' IoT components that include AWS IoT Core, AWS Greengrass ML Inference, and the recently released AWS IoT Analytics service. These services are combined with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and AWS Lambda to optimize processing of hundreds of thousands of data points per minute to derive insights and predictive analytics models that can then be distributed to the vehicles to take preventative action in real-time.
