Swimmer Diana Nyad To Headline Women’s Flag Football Tourney In Key West

Record-setting swimmer Diana Nyad confirmed as speaker and Grand Marshal at women's flag football tourney

KEY WEST, FL / ACCESSWIRE / January 19, 2017 / The International Women's Flag Football Association has released their itinerary for the 2017 Kelly McGillis Classic Women's and Girls Flag Football Tournament from January 23rd to January 30th.

Famed swimmer and inspirational personality Diana Nyad is confirmed to speak and lead the Annual Kelly McGillis Players Parade as Grand Marshal on Thursday, January 26th.

Nyad will speak at tournament opening ceremonies beginning 4pm at LaTeDa in Key West. The Annual Kelly McGillis Players Parade follows immediately after at 6pm. Tournament teams from Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and across the United States will march down Duval Street in their uniforms carrying their country's flag.

Back in the 1970s, Diana Nyad was the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. She has set records in the sport and became acclaimed after setting her world record swim circling Manhattan, New York in 1975.

On September 2, 2013, Diana Nyad, at 64 years old, was the first person ever to swim the Gulf of Mexico from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida without a shark cage, swimming a distance of 111 miles. It took her 53 hours, 5 attempts and 35 years.

In between those years, Diana has lived a full and busy life as a news and sportscaster, motivational speaker, journalist and author, and currently she runs her fitness business, BravaBody.com.

Also speaking are Native American lecturer Carol Wynne and clinical psychologist Lucy Berdette. Wynne is a Native American Indian and moderator for the Bourne Historical Society who will lecture on the true experiences and life of Native Indians since the 1600's. Burdette is author of the Key West Food Critic Mysteries. Her stories have been shortlisted for Agatha, Anthony and Macavity awards. Her work can be found at www.lucyburdette.com.

Now in its 26th year, the Kelly McGillis Classic will see teams from across the United States and the world come to compete and fellowship together. Games take place at the Wicker Field Complex between 14st & Kennedy Blvd on Flagler Ave.
