Roxie's House of Joy Launches Blankets and Swaddle Sets on Amazon.

The simple baby blanket can be optimized to support a baby's development; at least Carol Vandiver Stein, CEO of Roxie's House of Joy, believes that it can be.

She launched Roxie's House of Joy in January to prove her theory that baby products can be a pleasure for both parents and babies to use. "When I looked at the baby blanket market, I found pale pastels and designs that look like upholstery fabric. I assumed the babies were as bored with the whole thing as I was, so I knew I had found an area where I could make a big difference."

Supporting Visual Development in Infants

Blankets designed to appeal to parents often use traditional pastels, but eye doctors and pediatricians know that a baby's vision isn't developed enough to detect those subtle shades before five months of age. Before that, babies are more attuned to high-contrast designs, which is why Stein's first baby blanket featured a simple black pattern on a white background. "The black flower was always my favorite, and I knew that newborns were attracted to black because it was easy for them to focus on. The Flower of Life pattern is especially appealing because it's always attracted great minds. It was found in the notebooks of Da Vinci and Galileo."

Selecting designs for Roxie's House of Joy is a detailed process. All patterns need to pass muster with a baby's visual development and be of genuine interest to children. In addition to graphic designs, other blankets feature faces to attract babies' attention. "When I saw the Emotional Marshmallows I knew they fit right into our philosophy of creating blankets that babies will love. Learning how to read people is so important, and babies are just drawn to faces."

Other Areas of Sensory Development

Roxie's House of Joy baby products also keep other senses in mind. Because touch is a crucial part of developing healthy attachments, Stein knew she wanted to produce a blanket that would be comfortable all year long. "I live in Texas and will only sleep with cotton sheets and blankets myself year round. Only cotton doesn't overheat."

"100 percent cotton muslin fabric wears well with age, becoming softer with repeated washing and fits into the pleasure-to-use philosophy."

The natural cotton also absorbs scent and provides olfactory stimulation for babies, who are calmed by the scent of their parents and familiar surroundings.

Can a baby blanket really make such an impact on a young family? Stein says yes. "The colors and designs provide visual stimulation helping to develop and grow their brain cells. We have chosen designs that are engaging and educating them in art, science, astronomy, philosophy and their own feelings. Baby brain development and education are things loved by new parents."

"But what I mostly want," she says, "is for our baby blankets to be loved by babies and toddlers."
