Countywide Activities Celebrate Successful Community Partnerships

The unique challenges in Morris County are the high average cost of housing, the scarcity of housing in the affordable cost range and the lack of awareness that the problem exists here. Working to overcome those challenges, FPMC provides a full offering of programs to those in shelter and to the community at large to address the range of issues that affect low-income families.

"We provide services to the most vulnerable individuals and families in Morris County," said Joann Bjornson LSW, Executive Director, "through collaboration with social service agencies, businesses, donors, congregations and volunteers we are able to effectively transition our clients from a situation of homelessness to one of self-sufficiency."

A small staff and a hands on board of trustees are motivated to get the word out about FPMC during Family Promise Week. It's been a busy week, even for an organization that mobilizes 1,600 volunteers across 75 congregations annually. Here's a sampling of this week's activities designed to raise awareness of the homeless challenge in the county and the services provided:

  • Accepting $500 grant from The Kiwanis Club of Parsippany-Troy Hills.

  • Presenting to the students of Mountain View Middle School in Mendham to kick off activities including collecting donations and a full year plan of service learning activities with FPMC.

  • Atelier Salon, is opening the Denville salon especially for FPMC; providing free haircuts, manicures and pedicures to families in shelter. They are also holding a toiletry donation drive at their Denville and Basking Ridge locations to benefit families.

  • Education and outreach activities at Mt. Freedom Jewish center including a presentation with a former client and Board Member.

In preparation for November Homelessness Awareness Month, FPMC is launching the first of its kind Facebook Profile Frame. Given the viral nature of cause-related profile picture frames on Facebook, the organization hopes to use it with its vast volunteer community to spread the word about homelessness in Morris County. The frame has a collection of rising stars that symbolize the temporary nature of homelessness and the hope provided by FPMC to those who experience it. "We are Family Promise" expresses the communal approach of the Family Promise model.

The Facebook frame will be launched in November on our Facebook page facebook.com/FamilyPromiseMorris
