I was dedicated," says Starry eyed Heather Aren't of PolkaDots Traveling School of Dance. "Growing up poor has made me resourceful, and annoyingly tenacious about the things I am passionate about... And I am passionate about dance, kids and giving back to the world at large."
Heather's new invention the "Play Ballet" mat launched its Indiegogo.com campaign early Thursday morning. She is hopeful that funders will be interested in her patented idea and philanthropic aspirations. The mat is not only a progressive dance game for children aged 3-9 but, also a fund to teach dance to at risk youth in the California Bay area. 15% of the profits will go to funding dance programs in a partnership between Her traveling school of dance and Local after school and community center programs.
We asked Heather what a traveling school of dance is. She replied, "It's a monetarily accessible dance class in your neighborhood. We teach anywhere there is space. By cutting the overhead costs of running a studio we can offer classes at a base rate. This allows access to students of little means to take quality classes, further spreading my philosophy; dance is for everyone."
Heather is asking for funds of $16,000, the base cost of printing and packaging 1000 mats. It's astonishing how so little can mean so much to one person but, it does to her. When asked about her can-do attitude she quoted the 1980 Alan Parker film -Fame "How far our spirits go shooting out into space depends on how much we contribute to the earthly brilliance of this world, and I mean to be a major contributor....a sure as shit major contributor." How appropriate.
