Although discounted iPads are still up for grabs, most of the stocks have been depleted at many well-known retailers. Notably, the 16GB Wi Fi Only Mini and Air are out of stock at many stores, especially in-store. In contrast, the more pricey Wi Fi + 4G cellular models, as well as the 64GB and 128GB versions are still available at most shops. “However, if you hurry up, you’ll still be able to save over $70 on a brand new iPad. One of the biggest challenges iPad deal hunters will face this year is choosing between the iPad Mini 2 and Mini 3 or 2013 iPad Air and 2014 iPad Air 2. That’s because the 2014 models are not too different from the 2014 iPads in spite of the $100 price difference between them.
"The iPad Mini 3 and Mini 2 in particular are like identical twins except for a couple of features. The most significant difference from a hardware point-of-view is the introduction of the fingerprint ID scanner on the Mini 3" says Donalds. "There’s no doubt that this is a useful premium feature, but whether it’s worth the extra $100 the Mini 3 costs, is totally up for debate" adds Donalds. While many people will find this to be a useful feature, others will see no practical use for this. In fact, the majority of online iPad reviewers advice consumers against buying an iPad Mini 3 considering that all the other important hardware specs are identical.
"However, it’s a slightly different story for the comparison between the iPad Air 1 and Air 2" explains Donalds. Unlike in the case of the Minis, important hardware like the processor and RAM are different on the two models. “For example, the iPad Air 2 has a Triple-core, 1.5 GHz, Apple A8X chip with 64-bit architecture and M8 motion coprocessor. In contrast, the 2013, first generation iPad Air has a Dual-core, 1.4 GHz, A7 chip with 64-bit architecture and M7 motion coprocessor” she elaborates. This is not just a different spec on paper, but it has been shown to translate in to better performance in practice. The faster processor, the fingerprint scanner, the option of Champagne Gold and the slightly thinner and lighter specs of the new, 6th generation 9.7” Apple iPad may be worth the extra $100 for many consumers this year.
