As a New Article on the Company’s Website Explains, People Who Love a Good Cup o’ Joe Tend to Pay 20 Percent More for their Life Insurance Premiums

New York, NY / ACCESSWIRE / September 22, 2014 / LifeAnt.com, a life insurance provider based in New York City, has just posted a new article to its website that may cause millions of coffee drinkers to feel more than just a tad dismayed. Titled "Coffee Drinkers Beware! You’re Paying More for Life Insurance," the article, http://www.lifeant.com/coffee-drinkers-beware-paying-life-insurance/ states on average, coffee fans tend to pay higher prices for their life insurance premiums than those who do not enjoy the tasty beverage.

In fact, as Thomas Rockford, founder of LifeAnt.com and author of the new article noted, a survey that was commissioned by his company found that the average coffee drinker pays almost 20 percent more for life insurance than those who do not consume it.

"We found that the mean life insurance cost for a coffee drinker is $19.24 for their term coverage.  Non coffee drinkers are paying $15.98 for the equivalent coverage," Rockford noted, adding that the survey questioned 1,000 people -500 of whom regularly drink coffee and 500 who do not.

As for why fans of a hot cup o’ Joe tend to pay a lot more for their life insurance, Rockford wrote that it boils down to life insurance underwriting. This is the part of the application process that helps determine the applicant’s overall health, and typically includes an in-home health checkup called a paramedical exam.

As Rockford explained, this seemingly innocuous exam could be the source of higher life insurance premiums for coffee fans. During the paramedical exam, he said, the examiner will take the blood pressure and the heart rate of the life insurance applicant.

"Generally speaking, a lower heart rate and lower blood pressure correspond with greater cardiovascular health, and a longer life expectancy," he noted, adding that as a result, life insurance companies weight these factors very strongly in their underwriting process for the purposes of determining rate class, and therefore price for the insured person.

As studies have found, drinking caffeine may be linked to higher blood pressure. As a result, the coffee the applicant enjoyed that morning might cause a rise in his or her blood pressure and subsequent premium price.
