New Brunswick, NJ / ACCESSWIRE / September 9, 2014 / The Jets players are first to admit they played ugly in their season opener victory over the Oakland Raiders. But, despite the sloppy play they managed to start the season with a 19 -14 win over the Oakland Raiders. They are coming off a disappointing season last year that ended with Coach Rex Ryan's future in question. Ryan was retained for 2014 leaving fans wondering how many chances Ryan will have to turn the team around. Ryan's career in New York started out with great promise as he guided his team to consecutive trips to the AFC Championship in 2009 and 2010; however, in the three seasons since the Jets have not had a winning season. So, results need to improve greatly in 2014 or it could be the season for Coach Ryan. The season looks like a potentially pivotal one for the Jets and judging from the opener, long-suffering Jets fans remain one of the team's enduring great assets. The Jets offseason was mainly devoted to helping out their offense. The biggest offseason acquisition for the Jets was quarterback Michael Vick. Vick is not expected to be the starter in 2014, but Geno Smith can definitely learn a lot from an experienced veteran like Vick. Both quarterbacks have very similar play styles, so Ryan will probably find a way to use both of them in some sort of QB option wildcat formation. The Jets also acquired running back Chris Johnson over the offseason. Johnson is constantly labeled as lacking the explosiveness he used to have, but numbers don't lie and Johnson has had at least 1,000 yards in each of his six professional seasons with the Tennessee Titans. The Jets also still have Chris Ivory who seems to get better with every NFL season.

The Jets major problems come on the defensive side of the ball. When Pro Bowl lock down cornerback Darrelle Revis left the team, Antonio Cromartie was asked to take on the role as the number one defender on the team. Cromartie left the Jets this offseason to join the Arizona Cardinals, leaving absolutely no one to take his spot. The Jets brought in Dee Milliner with the ninth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft hoping he would be able to be the lead guy if anything happened to Cromartie, but he certainly did not look good at the beginning of his rookie season. Milliner surged at the end of the season, but he will be missing the first few weeks of the 2014 NFL season with an ankle injury. The only silver lining for the Jets defense is the pass rushing duo of Muhammad Wilkerson and 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year Sheldon Richardson. The two defensive ends combined for 14 sacks in 2013, and after a great offseason both players are expected to see an increase in sacks this season, especially Richardson who only had 3.5 of the duos 14 sacks.

The Jets will not have an easy ride to a playoff spot this season, especially being in a division with the New England Patriots. The Jets toughest games come back-to-back during Weeks 6 and 7 when they host the Denver Broncos and then travel to Foxborough to take on the Patriots. The Jets will need to beat the Patriots at least once in 2014 if they expect to make the playoffs.

The complete New York Jets schedule for the 2014 regular season is as follows:

Week 1: September 7th Final - Jets 19 - Oakland Raiders 14
