The Kirby is a newly renovated, gay-friendly boutique hotel and wine bar in Douglas, Michigan, the heart of Michigan’s famed Art Coast. The Kirby, where "old world charm of an 1890's Victorian meets modern luxury.”

Douglas, MI / ACCESSWIRE / July 22, 2014 / On August 2, 2014 The Kirby will open its doors as a luxuriously revamped, gay-friendly boutique hotel and wine bar in the heart of Michigan’s beautiful Art Coast. The hotel includes 7 modernly appointed guest rooms, a well-stocked wine bar and bottle shop, and stunning outdoor dining space on the home’s sweeping porch and wrap-around patio overlooking lush gardens.

The Kirby is something completely new for the area and stands in contrast to the more traditional bed and breakfasts the area is known for. While the gorgeous, Victorian exterior stays true to its history, the interior has been completely renovated and now boasts modern amenities, contemporary, handcrafted furniture and a fresh, clean design.

The hotel also includes a wide variety of dining options. Guest and visitors can enjoy eclectic wines, craft cocktails, local beers and whiskey flights. The Kirby also offers a variety of food and wine classes. The dining menu has a farm-to-table philosophy and incorporates fresh ingredients from local farms in fare ranging from brunch to small plates to gourmet pizzas.

Built in the late 19th century, The Kirby has a fascinating, rich history. In its more than 100 years in existence, the home has served as a private residence, a community hospital, a real estate office, an antique store and a bed and breakfast. The Kirby’s owner, Jay Deratany, was inspired to purchase the home after using it as a location for his independent film “Saugatuck Cures.”

His goal was to create a current boutique hotel while maintaining the home’s historical integrity. “I wanted to capture the old-fashioned charm of the place in a modern way. The idea was to combine old and new and offer the area something different than the usual B & B.”

Another thing that makes the hotel unique is that it’s gay-owned, gay friendly and caters to adult guests. There are many family-oriented accommodations in the area, but The Kirby offers a refined, peaceful environment perfect for couples or groups of friends who want to get away from it all.

The Kirby is ideally located just around the corner from the shops and galleries of downtown Douglas and a short walk from the many cultural attractions and nightlife in Saugatuck. Nearby is also the famed Oval Beach, recently named by Conde Naste Traveler Magazine as one of the most beautiful shorelines in the world.

The August grand opening will feature hotel tours, a film screening, as well as a preview of the locally sourced gourmet menu. Deratany and his team look forward to opening their doors and giving guests a unique and memorable experience in the new and improved Kirby.
